Severance splits its characters into work selves and outside selves, which can make the cast tricky to track. Here’s the cast of Severance, sorted by who plays whom on the severed floor and beyond, plus the major faces added in season 2.

The show was created by Dan Erickson and is directed mainly by Ben Stiller.

📌 Key Takeaways

  • Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, and John Turturro make up the core Macrodata Refinement team.
  • Patricia Arquette, Tramell Tillman, and Dichen Lachman play the key Lumon figures around them.
  • Season 2 added Gwendoline Christie, Merritt Wever, and more.

This article is for: anyone watching Severance who wants a clear map of the cast and their characters.

All six of our Severance guides, ordered so spoilers stay behind their warnings, are on the Severance hub.

The Macrodata Refinement Team

Adam Scott as Mark Scout. Mark leads the MDR team and is the show’s main character, split between his severed work self and his grieving outside self. Scott is known for Parks and Recreation.

Britt Lower as Helly R. Helly is the newest member of the team, and the season reveals a lot about who she really is on the outside. It’s one of the show’s most important roles.

Zach Cherry as Dylan George. Dylan is the sharp, competitive member of the team who becomes central to their rebellion.

John Turturro as Irving Bailiff. Irving is the rule-following veteran of the group, whose bond with another department drives one of the show’s key relationships.

The Lumon Figures

Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel. Cobel is the intense Lumon manager overseeing the team, and her role deepens considerably across the two seasons.

Tramell Tillman as Seth Milchick. Milchick is the ever-smiling Lumon supervisor whose politeness masks the company’s control.

Christopher Walken as Burt Goodman. Burt runs the Optics and Design department and is tied to Irving’s storyline.

Sarah Bock as Miss Huang. Miss Huang is the child deputy manager introduced on the severed floor in season 2, and Apple credits her alongside the original ensemble on its own show page.

Dichen Lachman as Ms. Casey / Gemma. Ms. Casey is Lumon’s wellness counselor, and the series reveals her dual identity as Gemma, Mark’s wife.

One Actor, Two Roles

Part of what makes the Severance cast confusing is the show’s premise: severed employees have a work self (an “innie”) and an outside self (an “outie”), and the same actor plays both. So Adam Scott is really playing two versions of Mark, and Britt Lower two versions of Helly, often with very different personalities. Keeping track of which self you’re watching is half the fun, and it’s why the same faces can feel like different characters scene to scene.

The Outside World

A few characters live entirely on the “outie” side of the story:

  • Jen Tullock as Devon Scout-Hale, Mark’s sister.
  • Michael Chernus as Ricken Hale, Devon’s husband and a self-help author.

Season 2 Additions

Season 2 brought in several notable new cast members, including:

  • Gwendoline Christie as Lorne
  • Merritt Wever as Gretchen
  • Bob Balaban as Mark W.
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Mr. Drummond
  • Alia Shawkat as Gwendolyn
  • John Noble as Fields

These additions widen the world beyond the severed floor, which is a big part of what season 2 sets out to do.

Behind the Camera

Severance was created and written by Dan Erickson, with Ben Stiller directing the majority of episodes across both seasons. Other directors, including Jessica Lee Gagné and Uta Briesewitz, handled episodes in season 2. That steady creative team behind the camera is a big reason the show’s look stays so consistent and unsettling from scene to scene.

If the cast pulled you in, the mystery of who these characters really are is the whole engine of the show.

Who Apple Actually Credits

Cast rundowns usually merge the official credits with everyone a fan wiki lists. Apple credits eleven names on its own Severance page, and it pairs each with a character, which Netflix pages do not do: Adam Scott (Mark), Britt Lower (Helly), Patricia Arquette (Harmony Cobel), Tramell Tillman (Milchick), Zach Cherry (Dylan), Jen Tullock (Devon), Michael Chernus (Ricken), Dichen Lachman (Ms. Casey), Sarah Bock (Miss Huang), John Turturro (Irving), and Christopher Walken (Burt).

Apple’s short forms are worth noting if you are searching: it credits “Mark” and “Helly”, not Mark Scout and Helly R. The season 2 additions listed further up this page are not in that block.
